For immediate release Sundale Nursing Home to seek Certificate of Need for the Palliative Care Center MORGANTOWN, WV _ Sundale Nursing Home will seek the approval of a Certificate of Need to open a 15 private room palliative care wing, providing a more home-like environment to meet the needs of the terminally ill who are "In our care, yet close to home". "We are excited about enhancing the services and amenities we can provide to the patients and their families who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness," said Joe Tuttle, president of the Board of Directors of Sundale Nursing Home. "This type of facility is long overdue in our community."
Sundale, established by the Monongalia County Commission in 1958, submitted notice on Sept. 8, 2008 of its intent to file a certificate of need application with the West Virginia Health Care Authority to construct the specialty wing serving end-of-life care patients and their families. "The palliative care wing will consist of 15 private rooms, kitchen and lounge areas for patients, visitors and family members, a non-denominational chapel for families and residents, and a private courtyard," said Michael Hicks, president of the management company operating Sundale. "Sundale's board of directors has been exploring the possibility of creating a end-of-life wing for several years," Hicks said.
Sundale, which has contracts with all three local hospice providers, had the state's third highest population of Hospice patients that were eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid services, according to the West Virginia Office of Accountability and Management Reporting. Initial costs associated with the expansion will be financed in part through Sundale's participation in the 2009 Neighborhood Investment Program of the West Virginia Development Office. The program, which runs through June 30, 2009, enables IRS-registered 501-c(3) corporations to extend West Virginia state income tax credits equal to a maximum of 50 percent of a minimum $500 charitable contribution. The funds contributed to Sundale will be used only for expenses associated with the design, governmental filing, capital campaign and construction of the new wing. Sundale is also nearing completion of the initial phase of renovations made possible by the October 2007 bond refinancing through the Monongalia County Building Authority. Those renovations include the addition of nearly 850 square feet of administrative office space, an expanded portico for visitors and ambulance transports, replacement of four rooftop HVAC units, new exterior trim paint and a new entrance sign. Additional facility upgrades recently started include a new resident pavilion, a replacement sidewalk at the first floor entrance, a new storage building/garage, and a new fence surrounding the facility's west lawn.
Sundale, originally named Sundale Rest Home, has been existence since 1958 when the Monongalia County Commission created a non-stock, not-for-profit organization with a self perpetuating Board of Directors comprised of civic and community leaders to care for the aged and infirmed of Monongalia and surrounding counties. First located on Van Voorhis Road, Sundale name was derived from its location between the Suncrest area and the Evansdale campus. Sundale has been in operation at its current facility on J.D. Anderson Drive since 1984. A 50th anniversary celebration is planned for later this year.
